Find the phosphate additives hiding in your pantry

If you or someone you care for has chronic kidney disease (CKD), ingredient lists can hide phosphate additives. This guide flags them in thousands of packaged US foods and shows sodium per serving, so shopping is a little easier.

Why “hidden” phosphates?

Phosphorus is a mineral that healthy kidneys keep in balance. When kidney function declines, phosphorus can build up, and many kidney care teams ask people to pay attention to it.

Phosphate additives are used in processed foods to hold moisture, keep ingredients from separating, or add a tang. They are generally absorbed more completely than the phosphorus found naturally in foods such as beans or nuts, and nutrition labels usually do not show how much they add.

Whether you need to limit phosphorus, and by how much, depends on your stage of CKD, your blood tests and your treatment. This site does not tell you what to eat. It only shows what the labels say, so you can bring better questions to your care team.

How it works

Start with a category

Share of products in our sample whose ingredient list includes a phosphate additive:

Coffee creamers

76%

76% of the 1,413 products in our sample list a phosphate additive.

Powdered and liquid creamers often use potassium or sodium phosphate to keep them from separating.

Plant-based milks

42%

42% of the 1,599 products in our sample list a phosphate additive.

Almond, soy, oat and other plant milks are often fortified with calcium phosphate or potassium phosphate.

Cereals

25%

25% of the 7,783 products in our sample list a phosphate additive.

Phosphates show up as leavening agents and fortification in many boxed cereals.

Deli meats & cold cuts

55%

55% of the 4,007 products in our sample list a phosphate additive.

Sodium phosphates are added to keep sliced meats moist, and these products are often high in sodium too.

Frozen dinners & entrées

40%

40% of the 5,838 products in our sample list a phosphate additive.

Phosphates can appear in the meat, the sauce, or the breading, so the whole ingredient list matters.

Sodas & soft drinks

20%

20% of the 7,222 products in our sample list a phosphate additive.

Many colas and some other sodas contain phosphoric acid. The category also includes some juice drinks and sparkling waters.

Hot dogs & sausages

37%

37% of the 4,614 products in our sample list a phosphate additive.

Phosphates are common in hot dogs and sausages, which are also usually high in sodium.
